The Air Beneath the River
Sylvester Stallone knows he cannot stay in the open water forever. With his wrists bound behind him, he lowers his head and folds forward. Short kicks carry him down along the riverbed. His boots disturb a small cloud of sand as he moves between stones and tangled roots.
Under an overhanging root shelf, he finds something almost impossible to notice: a pale bamboo tube extending through the roots. Sylvester Stallone reaches it with his shoulders and legs. He cannot use his hands, so every movement must be controlled. When his mouth reaches the hollow opening, he seals his lips around it.
The struggle for air eases.
For a moment, the river becomes a hiding place instead of a trap. Sylvester Stallone remains alert, listening to the muffled movement above. The bamboo gives him time, but it does not free him. His wrists are still taped together, and the search team is still close.
Above the water, one officer passes through the vegetation near the broken top of the bamboo. He never notices the opening. The searchers believe they are looking at an empty river while Sylvester Stallone breathes beneath them.
Then the danger changes.
A large crocodile glides through the water above the sandy riverbed. It does not attack. It does not even see Sylvester Stallone. Its quiet movement is more frightening because it proves that the hidden passage is not safe.
The Reeds and the First Escape
Later, a strip of silver tape reaches the surface. The commander sees it and orders the officers to spread out. Sylvester Stallone has managed to loosen one hand, but part of the tape still holds the other wrist.
He stays low beneath thick reeds at the waterline. The commander walks into knee-deep water while two officers push long branches between the roots. One searcher comes close enough to touch the reeds.
Sylvester Stallone pulls a root down with his free hand and lowers himself into the mud. He crawls sideways without splashing. A distant crocodile tail disturbs the channel, and the searchers turn toward the movement. Sylvester Stallone uses the distraction to disappear into a narrow inlet beneath the roots.
Inside the shadowed passage, he finds a thin fallen branch caught in the current. Sylvester Stallone pushes it into open water. The drifting branch draws a moving line of ripples that looks like a swimmer.
One of the officers sees the disturbance and points. The team follows the false trail downstream. The commander wades after the branch while the other officers scan the surface. The branch finally bumps against a stone beside him. He lifts it from the water and finds only an empty piece of wood.
By then, Sylvester Stallone has reached a darker hollow beneath the bank.
The Last Tape
The officers search directly above the hollow. Sylvester Stallone braces his legs against the sandy bottom and presses the remaining taped wrist against a jagged stone. With his free hand, he pulls the wrist slowly across the rough edge.
The tape weakens a little at a time. Silt clouds the stone. Sylvester Stallone stops whenever the search pole scrapes across the roots above him. At one point, a boot stops directly over the hollow.
He waits.
When the sound shifts away, Sylvester Stallone makes one final pull. The tape tears along one edge, and his second hand comes free. A loose strip still hangs around both wrists, but he can finally use his hands again.
Freedom lasts only seconds before another obstacle appears.
The crocodile glides across the wide entrance to the hollow. Its tail brushes the roots and lifts a veil of sand. The animal blocks the easiest exit, leaving Sylvester Stallone trapped between the officers above and the crocodile ahead.
Behind a flat rock, Sylvester Stallone notices a narrow secondary gap. A dead branch rests near the opening. He nudges the branch toward the far side of the hollow. The crocodile follows the small movement and turns away from the gap.
Sylvester Stallone slides behind the rock and reaches the narrow passage without touching the animal.
The Hidden Channel
The passage becomes tighter beneath a fallen tree. Sylvester Stallone pulls himself forward along smooth roots while the current draws his body through the submerged channel. Small bubbles escape from his wet clothing, but he keeps the movement quiet.
Above the fallen tree, the search team crosses the bank. Their boots appear as broken shadows through the moving surface. Sylvester Stallone continues until the channel opens into a pocket of trapped air beneath the tree.
He raises his face into the pocket and takes one silent breath.
Far ahead, a thin sliver of daylight shines through the roots. It is the first clear sign that the river may have an exit.
The Silent Emergence
Sylvester Stallone waits until the search team moves downstream. Then he lowers himself back into the water and pushes toward the opening. He slides under the fallen tree and emerges behind a curtain of reeds on the opposite bank.
He stays low in the mud and shallow water. Through the reeds, the commander and one officer pass along the bank. Their radio traffic says to search farther downstream.
A beam of light sweeps across the reeds and stops only a short distance from Sylvester Stallone. He does not move. The light crosses the leaves, pauses, and moves away.
Sylvester Stallone remains hidden until the shoreline is quiet again.
The Abandoned Canoe
Near the bank, Sylvester Stallone finds a narrow canoe overturned and caught in the roots. He loosens it carefully, turns it upright and settles inside without making a large splash.
The current carries the canoe along the reed line. On the opposite bank, the three officers notice the drifting shape. They believe Sylvester Stallone is inside and begin following it on foot.
The canoe passes behind hanging branches and enters a darker bend. The officers run past the real hiding place, following the wrong target. Sylvester Stallone steps onto a muddy shelf and pulls the canoe beneath the branches, leaving the waterway looking empty again.
The Radio in the Mud
Beside a root, Sylvester Stallone finds a waterproof shoulder radio half buried in the mud. He lifts it and keeps the volume low.
The commander reports that the canoe is empty. He orders the team to close the downstream perimeter. Another voice reports movement near the northern bank.
The searchers are close. A narrow rock shelf is the only open route away from the river. Sylvester Stallone looks toward the shelf, then back at the radio. The device could expose him, but it could also send the team in the wrong direction.
The False Location
Sylvester Stallone presses the transmit button.
“Movement at the north bend.”
The message is short and distorted. Before anyone can identify the voice, Sylvester Stallone lowers the radio into shallow water and moves along the rock shelf.
The officers hear the report and rush toward the north bend. They pass behind Sylvester Stallone’s hiding place. The commander hesitates because the message has no identifying voice, so he orders one officer to stay behind while the others continue.
Sylvester Stallone reaches a curtain of vines leading away from the riverbank. Behind him, the commander stops and studies the empty rock shelf. The false report has worked, but the commander is beginning to understand that the search is being controlled by someone who knows the river better than the team does.
The River Escape Is Not Over
Sylvester Stallone climbs a short muddy slope using exposed roots and leaves the waterline. At the jungle edge, a narrow natural passage runs between the rocks. He pauses beneath the leaves and looks back through the gap.
Below, the commander returns to the bend and finds the abandoned radio in the water. He lifts it and understands the deception. His attention turns toward the jungle edge.
Sylvester Stallone moves deeper into the passage. He expects the river, the crocodile and the search team to be behind him. Then he notices fresh footprints ahead.
They do not belong to the officers.
A faint metallic sound comes from the darkness beyond the passage entrance. Sylvester Stallone lowers himself into cover as a new unseen presence moves nearby.
He escaped the river. He broke the tape. He turned the search team against its own assumptions. But the jungle has been waiting for him, and someone—or something—was already there before he arrived.
The story ends with the footprints, the metallic sound and Sylvester Stallone hidden in the dark, facing a danger that no one on the river knew existed.
